What: The Pinewood Derby is an annual racing event and one of the most popular Cub Scout activities. Cub Scouts, with the help of parents, build their own cars from wood, using simple kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles.  The cars are raced side-by-side on a track and electronically timed.  The track is approximately 30' long with a 5' starting height.  Pack 460 scouts may race their cars at both the Pack Race and the District Race.

Car Construction Day is an opportunity for parents and scouts to build their cars alone or with the tools and help of other scouts and parents.  Tools such as drills, saws, hammers, etc. will be available for use, or you may bring your own tools to use.  Any parent help is appreciated.

Track Setup and Test Run Day is the opportunity for scouts to test run their cars and do unofficial weigh-ins/inspections.  The Race Coordinators also inspect the track and electronics.

Race Day is exciting, and every car races at least one heat in each lane.  Various awards are given both for the most creative designs, as well as the fastest cars in each den and overall pack.

Race Day is also a Pack meeting.  Pack meetings, which include participation by all dens, are the official gathering of the Pack and are conducted with various purposes and locations.  Among other things, they serve to honor scouts with awards, convey Pack information, and conduct ceremonies or other events.

The District Races are held at the Lebanon Valley Mall Show.  There is no qualifier for the District race; anyone may enter and the information for that race may be found in the Mall Show Information.
When and Where: See Calendar of Pinewood Derby Events below
Why: The Pinewood Derby fosters 6 of the 10 Cub Scout purposes: Character Development, Sportsmanship and Fitness, Family Understanding, Respectful Relationships, Personal Achievement, and Fun and Adventure.
Pack 460 Event Coordinator: See Pack 460 Contacts for coordinator information.
What to Bring: For Car Construction Day, tools will be provided, but you may choose to bring more tools to share.

For Race Day/Pack meeting:

Tigers: Bring a gallon of orange drink or lemonade

Wolves and Bears: Bring a salty snack such as pretzels, Doritos, etc.

Webelos: Bring a sweet snack such as cookies

What to Wear: For both Car Construction Day and Test Run Day: casual clothes since it sometimes gets dirty
